A New School Year
By Tanner Hernandez
Summer has come to an end, and we have begun a new school year. For me, it will be my fourth and final year at Archbishop Shaw. Having received information over the summer and during the start of school, I realized some things have changed for the year. Mainly the new changes were with academic standards, how classes were run, and our new shortened day schedules.
Out of all those changes, I can see God creating new opportunities for me and my friends this year. Some of the things I see as new really are not; however, after making my MLR the previous school year, my eyes were opened to what God wanted to show me. This year I have become more active in Peer Ministry, and also have done more with the Respect Life Club, and a few other clubs.
Since it is senior year, I want to be very active, but still do well with my school work. Remaining active in faith, while balancing a social life and school can be a challenging task for some. I am included in that group. Luckily, God gave me an amazing group of friends to surround myself with. We all attend church weekly, and also will attend the annual March for Life in Washington D.C. together.
Along with the new changes to school, I'd like to change some things about myself. Mainly, I want to spend more time devoted to school work throughout the whole week instead of waiting until the last minute. Also, I would like to dedicate more time to studying so I can improve my grades to get into a good college. One thing God has blessed me with in an incredible way is my leadership role as president of Peer Ministry. This comes with a lot of responsibility, like helping with retreats, Masses, Confessions, and different events, especially since it's the 200th anniversary of Saint John Bosco's birth.
This year I am mainly looking forward to the March for Life trip in January. As of now, Shaw has about 10 students going, all of whom are close friends. Another thing I look forward to is a youth rally we plan to host for Shaw, AOL, and the Salesian middle schools. It is scheduled to take place in February, with nationally recognized speakers to help celebrate Saint John Bosco's 200th birthday. The final big event that I'm sure every senior is looking forward to -- is graduation. It has been a long, tough almost four years, and I'm excited to move on to college; Shaw and the Salesians have prepared me well for what is next to come!
